Lore: Children used to believe that if they stared hard at the yellow flower they would go crazy which is where the common name "Crazy Bets" comes from. It grows commonly on the hummocks in cow pastures near watering holes and streams. Cows going down for a drink occasionally slipped on the hummock and thus another name is "American Cowslip."
